Experience Iceland at its most dramatic on The Eruption Escapade, a thrilling volcano helicopter tour over the Reykjanes Peninsula, one of the most geologically active regions on Earth. This unforgettable flight takes you above Iceland’s newest lava fields, crater rows, and volcanic fissures, formed during the recent eruption cycle that began in 2021.
Even when no eruption is active, the landscape below tells a powerful story of fire, pressure, and constant geological change a perspective that can only be fully appreciated from the air.
This is Iceland from above, raw and unforgettable.
👉 This tour complements our Scenic Helicopter Tour over Iceland and our Glacier Landing Helicopter Tour, offering a unique volcanic focus.
Latest eruption update:
The most recent eruption at the Sundhnúkur crater row ended on 5 August 2025.
Volcanoes do not follow schedules. Volcanic activity is natural and unpredictable, and eruptions may not be active during your visit. If there is no active eruption, we will still operate a high-impact scenic helicopter flight over Iceland’s newest lava fields and volcanic formations, ensuring a memorable and visually stunning experience.
Since 2021, the Reykjanes Peninsula has entered a new phase of volcanic activity, ending nearly 800 years of dormancy.
12 eruptions since 2021
5–6 eruptions during 2024
2 eruptions in 2025
Most activity occurred within the Svartsengi volcanic system, near Grindavík
These eruptions have created extensive lava fields, fissures, and crater rows — many of which are best viewed from the air due to safety restrictions and terrain.
Depending on weather, visibility, and routing, this helicopter tour may include views of:
The Sundhnúkur crater row and newest fissure lines
Fresh lava fields formed between 2023–2025
The Grindavík area, including protective lava barriers (viewed from a safe distance)
Older eruption sites from the 2021–2023 volcanic phase (conditions permitting)
📸 This flight offers exceptional photo opportunities not accessible by road or foot.
